Social media listening can help you find fresh content ideas

by | Jan 12, 2016 | Advice & Tips

content ideas

The best way to meet people’s needs is to listen to what they tell they are saying.  That’s why social media listening is such a great complement to my work as a publicist. I monitor sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to discover what people are saying about clients’ products and industries. Listening does more than provide real-time business intelligence. It helps me create engaging content ideas for clients’ digital marketing. I can also use these ideas to  help clients gain media coverage. Here’s how.

  • I monitor clients’ customer bases to see which topics interest them. Are new topics surfacing more frequently? Do certain subjects tend to cause an emotional reaction? Are there themes that customers never tire of discussing? These topics could make great blog content or media stories.
  • I monitor news organizations for popular storylines. If the media seems to jump on a certain type of story, I take note. If news stories seem to miss a key component, I use that information to propose story angles, as well.
  • I track clients’ competitors. Social media listening is a smart way to monitor competitors’ promotional strategies. We help our clients capitalize on their competitors’ gaps.

Here are a few insights I’ve learned from social media listening:

  • Tips, lists and slideshows make great content. Consumers and the media love material that provides helpful advice. I recommend titles such as, “The top five ways to … ”
  • Content should include colorful graphics. Photographs help catch readers’ attention. If our clients don’t have photos readily available, our graphic designers can locate or create striking images for them.

Fresh, relevant social media content helps attract website visitors. It demonstrates concern for consumers’ questions and needs. It shows your company is knowledgeable about trending issues. But it’s not always easy to think of content ideas. Social media listening can provide inspiration. It can help you understand the kinds of stories consumers want to see and hear.

Because social media is quite time consuming, our agency offers it as part of our digital marketing services. We can monitor social media sites and report on our findings. We can use what we find to arrange engaging, relevant media coverage for you.
