Be a media pro: Tip No. 8 of 17

Tip 8: Talk, Don’t Read Your Notes

Don’t depend too heavily on your notes for responses to questions asked by the interviewer. You might come across as under-prepared and phony. The best guests are those who can think on their feet. Listen attentively and provide answers that sound spontaneous. If need be, do a practice interview beforehand with a co-worker or friend. Have them ask you the same questions the interviewer might ask. This will help make your answers sound more natural and not scripted.

Example After a radio interview with an author, the producer of the show called back to let us know how the interview went. Unfortunately, the interviewee sounded like an infomercial because he read from his notes and didn’t alter his answers from any interviews he had done in the past.
