One good conversation with a reporter can open the door to more media opportunities

I had a great conversation with a local TV producer today. We started by talking about a February Heart Health segment I am booking on her show, and by the end of the chat I knew the door of opportunity to working together more in the future just got pushed wide open.

Turns out that I once worked on the same show for which she now does the booking. While we never worked together, we know a lot of the same people. I related to her weekly challenges of putting together a good show. At the end of the phone call she asked me to give her a call any time I had a new story for her to put on air.

I can’t stress enough how important it is for publicists to build good relationships with media contacts. It is one of the core fundamentals of our profession. The kind of relationship you have with the media can affect your ability to get your clients’ stories told.

If you come down to our office at any time of day, you’ll hear our team on the phone having quality conversations with reporters: telling them about all the background research we have on a story topic, the additional tools we have to give that article or TV interview more of a “wow” factor for their audience, or telling stories to develop rapport.

I look forward to the opportunity to connect with a new reporter every day. And who knows, maybe that reporter I contact tomorrow will be the one who puts your story on the air. Give us a call! 952-697-5269.
